Suzanne is an experienced insurance litigation lawyer with particular expertise in earthquake claims.

In the aftermath of the Canterbury earthquakes Suzanne worked for a major national insurer dealing with technical and litigated earthquake claim disputes and policy response issues.She now regularly appears for insurers in the Christchurch High Court’s earthquake list.

Suzanne represents insurers at all stages of the dispute, including providing advice on indemnity and liability, defending proceedings and representation for insurers at Court hearings, judicial settlement conferences and in direct negotiations.  She has successfully settled many earthquake claims and defended proceedings issued against insurers in the High Court. She was involved in the High Court and Court of Appeal cases in Marriott and Morrison on the key issues of automatic reinstatement, the indemnity principle and apportionment of damage across multiple events.

Suzanne’s experience in house and as external counsel has given her a unique understanding the challenges faced by the insurance industry and their customers as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes.  She gives targeted practical, technical and strategic advice to insurers which responds to their business needs. She also brings cconsiderable negotiation and dispute resolution experience to her practice.

In addition, Suzanne acts for insurers and their customers in material damage, business interruption, professional negligence/disciplinary claims and proceedings.

Suzanne studied Law at the University of Canterbury (LLB/BA).  She practised in Auckland, Tauranga and Melbourne predominantly in civil litigation and construction defects litigationbefore applying that experience to the earthquake claims environment.

  • Professional Indemnity – engineers, architects, real estate agents, valuers, accountants, lawyers.
  • Material Damage and Business Interruption – earthquake policy response issues.

Recent trial involvement/outcomes:

  • Earthquake. High Court and Court of Appeal decisions in Marriott and Morrison on key issues of automatic reinstatement, merger, indemnity principle, deductible and apportionment of damage across multiple events.
