Lauren van Arendonk


With experience in a variety of legal areas, particularly commercial contracts and commercial litigation, insurance, debt recovery and commercial property, Lauren joined McElroys in June 2019.

Lauren was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor to the High Court of New Zealand and as a Solicitor to the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2015 after completing a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in 2014 at the University of Waikato.

With her a passion for advocacy, Lauren began working as a Solicitor in a boutique commercial litigation firm in Sydney in early 2015. Lauren relocated to the UK where she practiced in-house advising on commercial contracts, procurement and commercial property matters before returning to New Zealand in 2019.

When not in the office, Lauren is a yoga instructor and a keen tennis and squash player. Lauren has a passion for writing and contributes to several publications as a freelance writer.

  • Marine cargo and transport – subrogated recoveries


  • Numerous successful settlements of claims against international shipping lines.
  • Great working relationships across national and international cargo claims, parties and personnel.
  • Strong working knowledge of maritime laws, as well as local and international carriage regimes.
  • Able to achieve efficient resolution  of cargo claims of all sizes.
  • Strong working knowledge of discovery process and protocols.
  • Tessa recently spent twelve months as a Claims Handler for one of New Zealand’s leading Marine Insurance companies.
